There's nothing that can beat a tasty home cooked meal! We love home cooking and so do our dogs! Here are a selection of healthy and simple recipes to try for your dog when you want to give them that extra special treat.

Every Day Chicken & Rice Dinner

The basic ingredients to make enough for several big meals are (ideal for freezing into seperate portions and using as required):

450g chicken mince
1 cup of rice (preferably brown)
1 large carrot
1 courgette
1 tsp Marmite or other yeast extract

Boil the rice in a large pan of water according to the instructions on the packet. While this is bubbling away, grate the veg as finely as you can and leave to one side.

Then warm up a large saucepan and add the chicken mince. Fry it over a gentle heat for 5-7 minutes until it is cooked through and brown on the outside. You shouldn't need to add any oil as there is plenty of fat in the mince.

When the rice is almost cooked (1-2 minutes away), drop the grated veg into the water and let it simmer until the rice is done. This makes the veg much more digestible, without losing all of its goodness.

Then drain away the water, and pour the cooked rice and veg into the saucepan with the turkey in. Mix in the Marmite and stir all the ingredients together.

Allow the mixture to cool and serve with a few of your dogs normal dried biscuits to add a bit of crunchy texture.

Bacon Flapjack Treats

You'll need:

100g margarine
125g porridge oats
50g self-raising flour
2 tablespoons cornflour
1 teaspoon mustard
2 tablespoons olive oil
2 rashers bacon

Fry the bacon until crispy and, when cool, cut into little pieces. Keep the oil from the pan to hand.

Meanwhile, mix together the margarine, oats and flour and corn flour in a large bowl. Add in the mustard, chopped bacon and olive oil, mix thoroughly and then press into a greased baking tray. Drizzle the fat left over in the frying pan over the mixture before putting it into a hot oven (190oC Gas mark 5) for 20 minutes.

Liver Cake

High value training reward that your dogs will love!

You will need:

8ozs Liver [preferably Lambs]
4ozs Self Raising Flour
2 Eggs
2 Cloves Garlic/ or 2 tsps garlic puree.

Put all the ingredients into a blender until the mixture is smooth, pink and runny [not too rigid a requirement if you prefer to make it a bit chunky) Pour into greased swiss roll type baking tin and place in the oven [Gas Mark 4] for around 30-40 minutes.
Leave to cool and cut into bite size pieces.
It can be frozen into individual bags.
